In Buddhism, it is believed that the Buddha is a being that has been fully awakened spiritually and enlightened to achieve freedom from suffering. People all over the world place Buddha statues in their homes because it is a sign of awakening as well. Buddha was thought to achieve a place of Nirvana. Buddha literally means awakened or that which is aware.
Typically, people think Buddha is worshipped as God. This is a misconception as Buddhism is non-theistic in teachings. Buddha is a guide and teacher that points the way to enlightenment. Buddhism teaches that anyone can reach a state of Nirvana through practice and diligence and meditation. A Buddha statue placed in the home is done with reverence and in a place of honor. Many Buddhists have altars in the home and the statue is generally on the altar. There are many statues of Buddha in gardens as they are held to be a blessing to the grounds. This is comparable to a Madonna placed in the yard or garden as a blessing and protection. You will often see a seated, reclining or standing Buddha and they feature different hand gestures. Many people associate the most commonly known Buddha as the one seated. Place a Buddha wherever you feel called to feel closer to God, or place in a meditation room. Buddha is very popular in China and in the tradition of Feng Shui. Find the statue that you like or are drawn to and place it with intention in a place of honor.
